Analyst Notes

Oracle NetSuite is a leading provider of cloud financials and broader ERP functionality (order management, CRM, e-commerce, inventory, et al) to small and midsize companies. It is widely adopted among late stage software and tech companies, among other verticals. The SuiteBilling functionality was once a major focus of the company. A new engineering squad was recently applied to the product, and the roadmap appears to be re-invigorated.

Oracle NetSuite has a very large sales channel and a mass market marketing approach. SuiteBilling is one among many modules that can be added for marginal cost to the overall cost of the ERP solution. Savvy buyers in competitive deals will find the license cost of SuiteBilling to be very attractive. It is an ideal fit for companies with low to modest rates of change, simple product catalogs, and moderate pricing complexity. As a customer’s business begins growing in complexity (e.g., selling bundles, ramp deals, pre-paid, post-paid, one-off billing runs, invoice customization, etc.) the limits of the product are tested. It can handle things like bundles, tier and volume pricing (and more), but with limited agility. This evolution may lead to unbudgeted professional services expense and the need for a full-time admin. Companies with more complexity in their business model may also end up looking for an addition of a purpose-built billing engine to augment the Oracle NetSuite solution.
