On the Horizon

How Will AI Impact Budget Planning Season?

“What are we doing about AI?”

It’s an open question, and every organization needs a coherent answer to give the board and investors. For most organizations, AI represents a tremendous opportunity for cost savings and strategic differentiation. For some industries, however, it looms as an existential threat.

  • Executives need to have a real plan with governance rules in place for how AI will be evaluated and then justified from a business case/investment perspective.
  • Users will need to find areas of cost savings, up to and including the defunding of other expenses, to pay for new investments in AI.
  • Many vendors are talking up their AI capabilities to investors, creating an expectation that AI will be sold as a premium add-on. Users, however, have not allocated funds.

Disappointments all around should be expected. Companies will need to devote time and resources to figuring out exactly what AI represents for their business, how they plan to address it, how much to commit, and how they plan to pay for it.

MGI is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, September 19 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET to provide an IT investment outlook, present updated macroeconomic scenarios, and dive into the impact of AI on 2024 budgeting. You can register for the webinar here.
